Playful Change

The serious use of humour to help you get more out of life!

Research shows that when we are relaxed, playful and having fun, we are more open to learning, more creative, have better relationships and experience more wellbeing. Playful Change is the use of humour to help you get different perspectives on all kinds of issues including phobias, smoking cessation, relationship difficulties, bereavement, setting directions in life, work problems, confidence building, anxiety. It is particularly helpful if you have already done a lot of therapy work on an issue and feel “stuck”.

Why try Playful Change?

  • Why not?!
  • It is fun
  • It is about laughing at your problems, not you
  • It enables you to think creatively
  • It can rapidly help you to defuse negative emotions, gain new perspectives and behave in new, more helpful ways
  • It does not involve playing in a sandpit!

More about Playful Change

The use of humour in therapy began with Frank Farrelly and he named his approach “Provocative Therapy”. Playful Change is an updating of Provocative Therapy by Phil Jeremiah, who studied with Frank for many years. I in turn have studied extensively with Phil and presented Playful Change at the ANLP conference in 2016.

More about Playful Change

Oscar Wilde said that life is too important to take seriously.

You may have noticed that you are most able to learn and make changes in the way you think, feel and act when you are feeling relaxed and open and having fun – when you are in a “playful” state. The latest scientific research backs this up.

The pioneer in using humour therapeutically was Frank Farrelly, who created Provocative Therapy in the 1960s. Playful Change is a development of Frank’s work to help people to make significant and lasting changes in their lives. Defined as “the serious use of humour to enhance life choices,” Playful Change uses playful humour and laughter to challenge old, habitual ways of thinking and behaving and open doorway to new possibilities and choices.
